Old Quilts…simple country pleasures

My Great Grandma Elsie Skeen Delk  was a tall  large boned woman and strong like a horse. She wore simple dresses, had grey hair, and wore glasses. I do not remember her voice…for some reason…Nor do I remember her talking . She married a much older man Frank Delk  and they raised their family Lala, Blanche, Ruth, Mitchel, and my Grandpa Astor on this farm.

They raised their food…cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, and grew their vegetables and fruit. My Grandpa Frank Delk was a good gardener according to my Grandma (Daddy’s Momma)

As I picked up the quilts for my camping trip last week I thought about my “Old Quilts”.

I looked at the beautiful hand sewn work on the two tacked quilts I was taking along…They still smell like they did when I was a girl and I made tents in the Living Room with them and played for hours and even took a nap under their canopy.

My two quilts were made by my Great Grandma Elsie Skeen Delk (My Grandpa Delk’s Mother) and given to me many years ago by my Grandma Delk (my Daddy’s Mother) and far as I know the only two quilts that remain in the family.

They are very heavy and very warm.

I thought about the history of my quilts that are 100 years old and how special it is to have such a heirloom of my family. I felt so safe and secure and warm …I used the quilts for cover at night and then to keep my bed dry when the fog and mists rolled into Fairwood Valley as the sun set…

I could feel my Great Grandma’s presence and the peace that gave me was amazing!

The quilts are back home safe and sound and in their cabinets so all can see and enjoy…

I love Old Quilts!!!
