My amazing KAT Ballou! She reminds me so much of her momma Abilene. She is extremely loyal to me, but sweet as pie to others too—both human and canine. She wants to do whatever I want to do, she lives to be with me.
KAT is second to none in the sheep pens. Just the other day, at 7 years old, she worked the pens all day long while we worked through the entire flock trimming feet and doing maintenance work on them. She is excellent at loading a chute, narrow spaces don’t bother her a bit. Tight pens and trailers are no problem with this girl. Not only is she a solid sheep dog, but she also works cows and ducks. I suspect she’d work anything I asked her to.
Outside of her herding abilities, KAT is an incredible mother. She has the innate maternal instincts that her dam Abilene had, mothering not only her own puppies but other baby animals as well. She has warmed up many a lamb, making sure they are dry and clean and taking special care not to hurt them. She’s also my number one trail dog. She sticks right by my side no matter where we are riding, never bothering the horses or straying far. She is level headed and stable in any situation I’ve presented her with.
KAT is wholly devoted to me but loves to greet strangers when allowed and that quality makes her a perfect farm greeter at our trials and clinics. She alerts when things are out of the ordinary which is very handy, especially at night when coyotes lurk around. Coyotes and sheep don’t mix well! She is overall an excellent representation of the breed, both inside and out.
